To herald distilling’s return to its global roots, Dublin’s “amber triangle”, this project transforms a deserted warehouse to a dynamic factory, adding a novel visitor centre of expressive, idiomatic architecture. The alchemy of whiskey mixes water, grain, yeast, with heat, time and a master distiller. The architect felt it was appropriate to limit the materials in the building palette to a similar triumvirate: steel, wood, masonry - seen through glass and space by the tasting visitor. This design imbues place with industrial grit-and-graft - a distinctly Liberties’ charm -using native, natural materials: stone, metal, timber, glass. Materials switch and slide in plane, polish and craft –raw and sophisticated - vernacular overtones, whimsical echoes. A durable, rudimentary finish and form anticipates patina of time and flex of space: iconic elements in flow and flux.
