Timber in the City : 4 projects - The use of timber in our cities is growing; globally timber is moving back to the centre in terms of structural materials simply because we can grow it and it looks great. Through 4 projects we show how timber can be used: as a complete building structure with massive timber columns, beams, and floor slabs, clad with timber facades (Ballyogan Operations and Maintenance Depot); as a hybrid system of massive timber columns and beams with concrete floor slabs and cores, clad with timber facades (Samuel Beckett Civic Campus); and as a structural facade system as beams, columns, and trusses (Elm Park and the Leinster House Welcoming Pavilion). The Samuel Beckett Civic Campus provides for much needed new community rooms and childcare facilities as well as a new leisure centre, including a gymnasium, dance and fitness studios and three all-weather astro sports pitches. In keeping with Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council’s commitment to ensure best practice in construction of municipal buildings, the new facility is designed to be low energy use, utilising techniques such as natural ventilation and maximising natural daylight and using natural and renewable materials where possible.
First-come basis: Just turn up and look out for Open House Dublin volunteers. Tours of the Samuel Beckett Civic Campus will also include a visit to the Ballyogan Operations & Maintenance Depot.
