Winner of the RIAI Best Sustainable Project 2017, Rochestown House Phase 2 comprises of 34 one bedroom dwellings that are available to eligible older people on the social housing list. The project aimed to upgrade an existing 2 storey residential block, situated in the former walled gardens of Somerton House, to a highly efficient, community oriented building. An additional floor was added to the existing 2 storey building, increasing the number of units provided and incorporating communal social facilities for residents. The building has undergone a deep retrofit to achieve the EuroPHit standard – the Passive House certification for existing buildings. Despite being highly designed for energy efficiency, the architectural language of the project responds quietly to the context of the walled garden using a language where new elements are expressed in simple forms and built with brick and timber to create warm comforting textures. Visitors will be led on a guided tour of the public and communal areas.
