Winner of the RIAI Best Sustainable Project 2017, Rochestown House Phase two comprises of 34 one bedroom dwellings that are available to eligible older people on the social housing list. The project aimed to upgrade an existing two-storey residential block, situated in the former walled gardens of Somerton House, to a highly efficient, community oriented building. An additional floor was added to the existing two-storey building, increasing the number of units provided and incorporating communal social facilities for residents. The building has undergone a deep retrofit to achieve the EuroPHit standard – the Passive House certification for existing buildings. Despite being highly designed for energy efficiency, the architectural language of the project responds quietly to the context of the walled garden using a language where new elements are expressed in simple forms and built with brick and timber to create warm comforting textures.
