This 1950s two story terraced house is altered and extended to enhance light, space, views and privacy. The first floor is flipped and ground the floor is extended while details remain simple in line with the home’s existing character. Daylight to the original living room is tempered by the shape and built up sides of the long thin central courtyard. The narrow site means rooms are formally aligned (en enfilade) allowing the plan depth to be enjoyed. Room heights change as you move through; opening up in the new long living room where the ceiling follows the A form roof. The volume is reminiscent of an Irish cottage with the walls removed. The brick chimneystack is pushed to one side and day lit by a large skylight on the west facing roof slope and the stairwell ceiling bends to allow sunlight and views into the north-facing first floor bathroom.
