An elegant contemporary addition, clad in Ballinasloe limestone, this project by Grafton Architects shows careful consideration of context on all sides. The project is sited in a diverse and historical urban landscape. A diagonal relationship between two green spaces, the 19th Century St. Stephen's Green and the 'secret garden' of the 17th Century Huguenot Cemetery, allows this new building to relate to both of these spaces as well as the immediate 18th Century Georgian streetscape.
The railings and gate maintain this street line while the sunken 'area' continues the language of the Georgian city, bringing light to the lower levels. The facade was developed to form a deep stone and glass screen. The building provides office accommodation for the Department of Finance, securely linking to Government Buildings, as well as restoring and incorporating the Billets, a mews-type building dating to 1912.
