In 1976, Scott Tallon Walker were commissioned by the Dublin Port Company's predecessor, the Dublin Port and Docks Board (DP&DB), to design an office building with a strong visual presence in the port. The six-storey building, completed in 1982, sits on a raised podium with the top floor dedicated to plant and ancillary accommodation, while four floors below provide office space with spectacular views over the city. At the time of construction, the Board undertook extensive consultation on modern office configurations and the building was designed to embrace change and innovation. The structure is expressed externally in pre-cast concrete columns and beams. In December 2016 Dublin Port Company announced details of a new project to soften its boundaries to the City and provide public realm at Port Centre for the first time in 35 years. This is the largest physical intervention by Dublin Port to reintegrate the Port with the City, as committed to in the company's Masterplan. Darmody Architects created this wonderful new space which opened in October 2017 and recently won RIAI "Public Space" award. Tours will include the café and top floor of the building which has an incredible view of the port.
