Exploring the potential to create a low-cost, contextual family house, this project uses eleven standard length shipping containers (seven in phase one, four in phase two) stacked on three levels. The modular-construction properties of containers were utilised to achieve both a short construction period and a phased construction of this family home. The house fits snugly into a constricted urban infill site with surroundings, typical of Ringsend, that are eclectic, robust, and maritime in character. The Dublin Planning and Property Development Department was receptive to the appropriateness of the project to this gritty dockland atmosphere and to the development of a new typology for Dublin to enrich the diversity of its urban fabric. This house has implications for current policies encouraging long-term and family-oriented dwelling in the city centre.
