The library and archive complex boldly stitches together ‘old’ and ‘new’ through the redevelopment of a 1909 building and the addition of a 21st century library headquarters. The original building has interesting architectural features including a Mount Charles sandstone façade, portico, a Palladian window and triangular pediment. The 2003 extension consists of 2 adjoining late Georgian houses and a semi-circular glazed atrium, which was built to the rear. Material for the dramatic extension - steel metal decking, structural glazing and curtain walling - make an appropriate contrast with the old building, while the form echoes the curved industrial roofs of nearby Pearse Station.
