dlr LexIcon is a multi-media library and cultural centre set in a park, facing the sea and overlooked by the civic institutions of the town: the church, grand hotel and town hall. A true public space in the centre of town, the LexIcon has reconfigured the urban grain of Dún Laoghaire around a potential 21st century archetype. The building expresses its internal context in wide openings, where people sit framed by panoramic views of the landscape, and the tall sea window which offers a portrait view of the sea and sky as ships pass over the horizon. The materials of the building employ the traditional Dublin palette for public buildings: granite and bronze. The building shell itself is a voluminous concrete form, into which oak linings for books and sound modulation are inserted. It won the RIAI Best Culture Building and Best Public Building in 2015, Overall Schueco Excellence Award and Sustainable Award also in 2015.
