Appearances can be deceiving. This is certainly the case with 9/9a Aungier Street. Behind an unassuming 20th century façade remains a house surviving from 1664. Within the oldest, most intact domestic structure in Dublin City lies an original staircase, roof structure, medieval-style timber-framing, 17th century plan and remnants of original paint and plaster finishes which pre-date Georgian Dublin by over half a century. 9/9A is the ‘jewel in the crown’ of Aungier Street, an elite 17th century development, and a living reminder of a cityscape and inheritance now obscured, but not lost.
